Artificial intelligence is significantly intensifying the cyber arms race, allowing both attackers and defenders to innovate rapidly. While cybercriminals are quick to deploy AI for various attack strategies, companies are also utilizing the technology to bolster their defenses.

“Speed is the dominant factor in this developing scenario,” noted Rob Malone, U.S. head of cyber for Axa XL. He observed that malicious actors are leveraging AI to enhance the efficiency of each phase of a cyber breach, while defenders work to refine established preventive measures.

Danielle Roth, head of cyber claims for Axa XL in North America, emphasized that the opportunities presented by AI are available to both sides of the cyber warfare equation. Organizations can deploy AI technology to improve security and response times, but they face mounting pressure as criminals become adept at utilizing the same tools.

Mike Colford, senior vice president and cyber product leader at Westfield Specialty, pointed out that the use of AI by cybercriminals is making attacks more automated, thereby broadening the pool of potential hackers. “The barrier to entry for cybercrime continues to fall,” he remarked, underlining the need for organizations to maintain pace with technological advancements.

Interestingly, the rapid adaptation of cybercriminals may outstrip the defensive measures that organizations are able to implement. Tiago Henriques, chief underwriting officer for cyber insurer Coalition, shared insights on this lag, suggesting that traditional defensive strategies often lag behind offensive innovations.

There’s an undeniable shift occurring: companies are urged to invest in AI-driven solutions for patch management and vulnerability resolution. “AI agents are stepping in where human response simply can't keep up,” Henriques explained. “These solutions are enabling organizations to operate with unprecedented efficiency.”

This AI-fueled evolution allows even smaller enterprises to access advanced security measures. Craig Linton, who leads U.S. underwriting management for Beazley, pointed out that effective managed detection and response systems can level the playing field, granting smaller organizations access to protections typically reserved for larger firms.

For defending organizations, the struggle to keep pace with rapidly evolving threats means an urgent need for adopting AI-based tools. “Organizations must adapt more quickly than before,” said John Farley, a managing director at Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. “Relying on AI-powered defenses is no longer optional; it’s a necessity.”

Cybersecurity experts, including John Butler from E-Risk, suggested that combining AI-enabled security with strict governance practices positions organizations favorably against sophisticated threats. “A mature, AI-driven defense offers near real-time vulnerability assessments, enabling quicker remediation,” said Butler.

Kara Higginbotham from Zurich North America highlighted the ongoing challenge for security vendors and firms as they re-evaluate how their tools can respond to AI-enhanced threats. “There’s a pressing need for a proactive mindset when implementing cybersecurity controls and processes,” she noted, signaling a shift in approach toward threat management.


Strengthening Defenses: The Role of Network Architecture

As organizations face the evolving threat landscape driven by AI, a well-structured information technology network becomes paramount. Experts stress the importance of implementing effective network segmentation to contain potential breaches and limit lateral movement within an organization.

Mike Colford reiterated the significance of network design when it comes to underwriting processes, explaining that connections should only be made between essential systems. “Anything vulnerable shouldn't be linked to critical operations,” he advised, further emphasizing that segmentation acts as a key preventive measure.

Danielle Roth echoed these sentiments, identifying basic security practices such as patch management, endpoint detection, data classification, and network segmentation as critical elements in defending against AI-driven breaches. “These practices can mitigate damage if a system is breached,” she asserted.

Limiting access and connectivity is essential for minimizing the impact of cyber incidents, according to Marcello Antonucci of Beazley. He described internal segmentation as a powerful but challenging control measure. “While incredibly effective, executing segmentation can be one of the toughest tasks from an IT standpoint,” Henriques remarked, highlighting the complexities involved.

Ultimately, a proactive focus on network architecture and leveraging AI-enhanced security measures can serve as a foundational strategy for organizations aiming to guard against the sophisticated threats that define today's cyber landscape.
