Danielle Lisenbey, CEO of MedRisk, is the 2026 recipient of the Business Insurance Lifetime Achievement Award, recognized for her leadership and commitment to the industry.

Danielle Lisenbey’s journey in the insurance sector has been marked by significant milestones and a dedication to enhancing the industry's standards. From her early days as an operations supervisor to her role as CEO of MedRisk, her influence spans more than three decades and serves as a model for aspiring leaders, particularly women, in a traditionally male-dominated field.

One poignant moment in her career exemplified the challenges and triumphs of being a pioneer. During an executive meeting at Crawford, Lisenbey noticed that all seats were taken, leaving her without a place at the table. This experience was not just an oversight; it highlighted the subtle, often unintentional barriers faced by women in leadership roles. However, it also crystallized her resolve to assert her rightful position among her peers, demonstrating her belief in her earned place in the room.

“Because I earned being at that table,” she reflected, emphasizing the importance of presence and confidence in professional settings. A member of the Crawford family stepped in to offer his seat, a gesture that underscored not just her status as a leader but also the cultural shifts needed in corporate environments.

Career Development and Achievements

Lisenbey’s ascent began with a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Western Illinois University. Her early career involved technical roles, but her pivot to the insurance industry proved transformative. In 1992, she joined Medical Audit Services as an operations supervisor, setting the stage for her impactful tenure at Broadspire. Kemper Insurance tasked her with expanding the company’s medical bill review services nationally, a responsibility she embraced with her characteristic diligence.

Under her leadership, Broadspire transitioned from a struggling entity to one of the company's most successful divisions. When she was appointed CEO in 2012, the company faced a significant operational downturn. Revenue in 2011 was $235 million, with an operating loss of $11.4 million. By 2018, thanks to Lisenbey's strategic management, revenues soared to $405 million, accompanied by a marked operational profit of $37 million.

Among her key initiatives was the consolidation of five claims platforms into a single operational model, executed in under 18 months. This efficiency not only restored Broadspire’s profitability but also expanded its global reach into 22 countries. Such rapid transformation wasn't without its challenges; Lisenbey faced resistance from employees accustomed to traditional methods who questioned the company's shift to digital processes.

Her approach to leadership—grounded in empathy and transparency—helped mitigate fears and foster trust. “Truly being human and getting in front of the people and listening and explaining the why was essential,” she advised those resisting change.

A Champion for Women in the Industry

Throughout her career, Lisenbey has been a staunch advocate for women in the workforce. Recognizing the systemic barriers that often impede women's advancement, she co-founded the Alliance of Women in Workers' Compensation, aimed at empowering women within the industry. She has actively worked not only to mentor others but also to elevate the conversations around women’s representation and sponsorship in leadership roles.

"There’s probably not enough women out there advocating for other women like the guys do," she said, highlighting the crucial need for female sponsorship. Lisenbey’s success has not only paved the way for her own career but has also opened doors for others, cultivating a more inclusive environment for future leaders.

Lisenbey's leadership style draws inspiration from her upbringing. Her father, a Marine and HR executive, instilled in her the importance of resilience and community. These principles guided her as she balanced her demanding career while raising four children. “They graciously shared me with an industry that often demanded more time of me than they wanted me to give,” she noted, reflecting on her commitment to both family and profession.

Transitioning and Consulting

In 2020, after establishing Broadspire as a significant player in the industry, Lisenbey faced a crossroads in her career. She was approached by Kenneth Martino, a former Broadspire CEO, to join MedRisk as president at a time when the company was navigating a critical phase of modernization amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Her leadership propelled MedRisk to new heights, overseeing an $815 million business and driving significant changes in technology and talent management until her retirement in May 2023.

Post-retirement, Lisenbey has not faded into the background. Instead, she has embraced a role as a consultant, mentor, and board member for various organizations. Through her work with Insightful Edge, she supports private equity firms and insurance companies in improving claims and medical management, reflecting her ongoing commitment to the industry.

Looking Ahead

As she looks to the future, Lisenbey stresses the importance of evolving recruitment strategies within the insurance sector. Companies must broaden their recruitment efforts beyond traditional college pathways to attract high school students into roles in claims and technology. She believes the human element remains irreplaceable, even as technology continues to advance; complex decisions should involve human oversight to maintain compassion within the processes.

Lisenbey’s career serves as a compelling narrative of resilience and determination. Even in retirement, she is dedicated to making a difference, aiming to inspire the next generation of leaders. "I might be finished in the traditional sense, but because I feel like I was afforded such an opportunity, I have this very strong sense of still wanting to give back and having an impact," she affirmed, highlighting her enduring commitment to leadership and community.
