The remake of Lara Croft’s 1996 debut arrives February 12, 2027, with classic puzzles, cat mummies and 48-hour early access in select editions.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Sets February 2027 Release Date

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is shaping up as both a remake of Lara Croft’s first adventure and a synthesis of the character’s three decades of reinvention. Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog are rebuilding the 1996 game with Amazon Game Studios for release on February 12, 2027. That combination sets up a balancing act: the original’s recognizable obstacles and creatures have to coexist with a Lara shaped by several different eras of the series.

The date appeared in a 30th anniversary teaser presented at Tomb Raider celebrations in Derby and MCM London. The game will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam. It’s the second remake of Lara’s debut, following Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider: Anniversary in 2007. A second return to the same source material raises the bar for what “remake” can mean: players have already seen the original reworked once, so the new version will need to make its choices about tone and design count.

A return to classic Tomb Raider challenges

The minute-long anniversary trailer moves between gameplay and in-engine scenes, foregrounding the climbing, traversal and puzzle solving associated with the original. Lara scales a cliff, shifts a huge boulder through a floor channel to solve a puzzle, swings from wall-mounted bars and dives into pools. She also performs flips during combat. The sequence suggests an adventure built around reading spaces and finding routes through them, with fights folded into a broader rhythm of exploration.

As Vice’s trailer breakdown observes, the footage puts old-school set pieces at the center. Combat includes human foes and a leopard, while the cat mummies from the 1996 game make a return. Their presence is a pointed nod to the original’s stranger, more unsettling encounters. The numbers here are underwhelming as evidence of how the remake plays: a short teaser can show the ingredients, but it can’t establish how demanding the puzzles are or how combat feels over a full game.

Release editions and early access

The trailer confirms three editions, including Deluxe and Collector’s versions. Buyers who pre-order any edition will receive Lara’s Survivor outfit from the 2013 reboot. Deluxe and Collector’s owners get 48 hours of early access, beginning February 10, 2027. That makes the outfit a broad pre-order bonus, while the earlier start is reserved for buyers choosing the higher-priced editions—though the publisher hasn’t yet said what those editions will cost.

  • All editions are scheduled for February 12 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam.
  • Pre-orders include the Survivor outfit.
  • Deluxe and Collector’s editions include early access from February 10.

Pricing wasn’t announced, leaving the cost of the editions—and the two-day head start—unclear. Until those details arrive, players can compare the stated bonuses but can’t judge what the early access or Collector’s package will ask them to pay.

Building a Lara for the anniversary

The release announcement follows a PlayStation Blog feature on Lara’s design by Amazon Game Studios’ Michael Lovan. It describes a character rebuilt in Unreal Engine with strand-based hair cards, skin rendered with subsurface scattering and custom facial blend shapes. Those details point to a production focused on how Lara reads in close-up as well as how she moves through large environments; character work can shape whether a familiar hero feels like the same person across different visual styles.

For one outfit, the team commissioned a real garment from a tailor and scanned it on a mannequin to capture how its fabric folds. That choice gives the design process a tangible reference, even as the finished character is built digitally. Crystal Dynamics narrative director John Stafford said the design aims to bring together Lara’s mythic, grounded and larger-than-life portrayals across the series. It’s an ambitious brief, because those portrayals don’t all ask for the same kind of hero.

Anniversary was about retelling a classic through a modern lens. Legacy of Atlantis is about synthesizing thirty years of Lara into something new.

Stafford also said the Survivor era showed the team that Lara works well “when danger has consequences”. That balance—familiar adventure mechanics paired with a character shaped by the full series—may be the remake’s defining ambition. Here's the thing: a polished model and a recognizable outfit can signal continuity, but the level design and Lara’s responses to danger will do more to show whether the different eras actually fit together.

What the date means for players

February 12 gives the remake a firm launch date, though it places the game beyond the franchise’s 30th anniversary year. Vice describes the February date as a slip into the following year, a delay for fans who expected to play during the celebrations. The anniversary has supplied a clear promotional frame, but the gap between the celebration and release means the game will have to carry that attention into the next year.

More footage could clarify how the remake handles its levels and combat before launch. For now, the key dates are February 12 for the full release and February 10 for Deluxe and Collector’s owners—with the returning cat mummies among the clearest signs that this version intends to keep the original’s perilous spirit. If you're working through the series’ long history, that blend of old hazards and later character design is the real point to watch. A familiar shape, under new pressure.
