Subnautica 2 Update Adds a Frog Chassis and a Leviathan That Scares Off Wildlife

Written Oct 25, 2026 Audience 504 Author Ravi Sinha

The next Subnautica 2 update adds new regions and abilities, while the Collector Leviathan sends other creatures fleeing for cover.

The Collector Leviathan’s arrival is set to change more than the danger level in Subnautica 2’s new regions. Nearby creatures retreat into trenches, while Tar Eels head for the tar fields, suggesting the predator’s presence can redirect wildlife across the environment. The player won’t be the only one trying to stay out of its way.

That behavior points to an encounter built around its effects on the ecosystem as much as the creature itself. In exploration games, a large predator can serve as a moving boundary: an area may remain reachable, but crossing it becomes harder when local life reacts to the threat. Here, the reported retreats give players a visible warning that the Leviathan is nearby. The warning may help with navigation, though it also raises a practical question: whether the wildlife’s response will give players enough information to judge the risk before they enter its path.

This is more significant than it looks. A creature that changes how other species move can make familiar terrain feel different without requiring every encounter to become a direct attack. The effect depends on how consistently the world communicates that change, and how much room players have to respond.

Clues about the Axum and the Colonists

Unknown Worlds Entertainment has also offered fresh clues about the Axum and the Colonists through its Voyage to Early Access 2 video series. Their stories remain obscured, and players will need to assemble them from environmental clues and notable objects, including evidence that may explain what brought down the previous Colonists.

That approach puts interpretation in the player’s hands. Rather than relying only on a direct account, environmental storytelling asks players to connect details they encounter while exploring. Objects can establish that something happened; their placement and condition may hint at how events unfolded. The method suits a game where movement through unfamiliar places is already central to play, since progress through the environment can also become progress through its history.

There’s a tradeoff. Sparse clues can make a mystery feel earned, but they can also leave players unsure whether they’ve missed a key piece or simply haven’t reached it yet. The Axum and Colonists stories will have to give attentive players enough to work with while preserving the uncertainty that makes discovery engaging. (And this is the part most people overlook: an environmental mystery depends as much on clear, memorable clues as on what those clues conceal.)

New abilities and regions on the way

The next early access update has no release date yet, but the studio describes it as the game’s biggest so far. The Tadpole will gain a Frog Chassis, whose limbs add new abilities. Players can also try new Biomods, while Fins will provide a Dash ability without taking up a Biomod slot.

Those additions appear to touch different parts of the movement system. The Frog Chassis ties new abilities to the Tadpole’s limbs, while the Dash is assigned to Fins and doesn’t consume a Biomod slot. That distinction could matter when players choose how to configure their equipment: a movement option that doesn’t compete for a Biomod slot may leave more room for other capabilities. The available details don’t specify what the new Biomods do, or how the chassis abilities will work in practice.

If you’re working through a dangerous region, movement options can affect more than speed. They can shape whether you can cross exposed ground, avoid a threat, or reach a place where you can regroup. But the value of each ability will depend on its limits and on how the new environments are designed around it.

Exploration with a cost

New biomes and creatures will fill out the added region. With the Collector Leviathan already changing how local wildlife behaves, the update’s appeal looks set to rest on both exploration and the risks that come with it.

That pairing gives the update a clear focus: new territory to investigate, alongside systems that may make travel through it less predictable. The wildlife response, story clues, and new movement abilities all connect to exploration, but the available information leaves important details open. There’s no release date, and the studio hasn’t described the update’s full contents here.

For players, the central question will be whether the new region makes its hazards legible without making them routine. A retreating creature might signal danger; a Dash might offer a way out; an object might hint at what happened to the Colonists. Each system has a different role, but they’ll be most effective if the game lets players read the situation and make meaningful choices. The promise is clear. The execution is still ahead.
